3Gbps SDI Support & Features on FSI Monitors
 

3Gbps SDI is a powerful connectivity option for monitoring of advanced signal formats whose bandwidth is up to two times that of standard 1.5Gbps HD-SDI signals. FSI Monitors equipped with 3Gbps SDI inputs, such as the LM-2461W, can support both Level A and Level B 3Gbps SDI signals. The equipment is therefore said to conform to SMPTE 425M-AB. Via Level A 3Gbps SDI Flanders Scientific monitors can support the following advanced formats that are not supported by standard 1.5Gbps HD-SDI:

3Gbps SDI Level A

1920x1080p60/59.94/50 (4:2:2)

1280x720p60/59.94/50/30/29.97/25/24/23.98 (4:4:4)

1920x1080i60/59.94/50 (4:4:4)

1920x1080p30/29.97/25/24/24sF/23.98/23.98sF (4:4:4)

2K (2048x1080) 23.98p/24p/23.98PsF/24PsF (4:4:4)

Level B is distinct from Level A in that it does not employ direct image format mapping. Simply put, this means that Level B 3Gbps SDI essentially supports two distinct 1.5Gbps (SMPTE 292M) signals combined (multiplexed) over a single 3Gbps SDI connection. This includes Dual Link (SMPTE 372M) signals that have been multiplexed together over a single 3Gbps SDI stream using Level B image format mapping (use Overlay Mode to monitor these signals). The Level B 3Gbps SDI capability on FSI monitors allows for the following unique monitoring options when the 3Gbps SDI signal is comprised of two distinct 1.5Gbps HD-SDI signals:



Notes on 3Gbps Level B capabilities
  • Link A and Link B streams in the 3Gbps SDI Level B signal MUST be the same format. For example, you cannot combine a 1080i and 720p signal over Level B 3Gbps SDI. Link A and Link B must have the same frame rate and same resolution to be supported over Level B 3Gbps SDI.
  • Link A and Link B must be genlocked. A high quality sync generator should be used for all signals that will be multiplexed over a single 3Gbps SDI stream.


3Gbps SDI Application Note - Using AJA's 3GM for Level B Monitoring



The AJA 3GM Multiplexer may be used (as in the example configuration above) in conjunction with a 3Gbps SDI equipped monitor, such as the LM-2461W, to monitor two 1.5Gbps SDI signals. Please note that for Level B 3Gbps SDI Monitoring the resolution and frame rate of the signal on Link A and B must be identical. Also note that the Signal for Link A and the Signal for Link B must be genlocked.
